2Lbs Chubby Freeze Dried Mealworms
A lot of other sellers of dried mealworms describe their mealworms as freeze dried when they are not. The vast majority of the mealworms for sale in the US are microwave dried but are described as freeze dried to either mislead customers or just because the sellers are uneducated in how the mealworms are dried or the differences in the 2 methods. In general freeze dried mealworms are a lot more expensive as the process of freeze drying costs a lot more and takes longer and there are not many producers doing it. It is very easy to tell the difference between freeze dried and microwave dried mealworms, microwave dried look hollow in the middle whereas freeze dried are almost solid and are a lot yellower in colour, please see our comparison pictures.
Freeze drying is a relatively modern process and is done by placing the mealworms on large racks inside a vacuum chamber before lowering the temperature to below freezing , and then slowly raising it again. The water in the food transforms from a solid state to a gas, thereby maintaining the food's structure and preserving its all important nutrients. The main benefits of freeze drying over microwave drying are:
- A longer Shelf Life due to lower moisture content.
- Freeze drying keeps the nutritional value as close to live mealworms as possible - the process keeps the food in a state of suspended animation and so once re-hydrated the mealworms are as fresh and nutritious as they were when they were frozen.
- They are a lot quicker and easier to re-hydrate than microwave dried mealworms and look more lifelike. Re-hydrating them in just cold water for a few minutes is enough.
- If you really don't like live mealworms but prefer to feed them to your animals then freeze dried really are the next best thing.

BlueBirds Can’t Get Enough
My chickens follow me all over the farm hoping for the chubby mealworms.
Chubby Dried Mealworms are the greatest! My younger hens went absolutely crazy over them and my two veteran hens who are usually very picky enjoy them (after the initial checking it out period). I like the easy close bag that my arthritic hands have no problems opening and re-sealing it. It is an exceptional product, for real!
This was my first order with your company. I usually purchase at my local feed store. I found it very easy to place my oder & I received the order quickly. Unfortunately, after I opened the bag, the zipper didnt close tightly & I didn't realize it until I found the girls gobbling up the goodies! LOL! I guess about 1/4 of the bag spilled out onto the patio... No one was truly bothered about it... the girls were super excited & our old pup, Cooper was also enjoying the treat!
(PS... the space given to write review is too tiny & difficult to go back for editting)
Seeing is believing. There is such a difference in the size & quality of these worms. Other brands have a load of broken pieces and these are pretty much whole with little worm dust at the bottom of the bag. Packaging protects the worms and my 7 week old hens already know to ask for them before bed time. I have trained my chickens to come when I call, “Who wants worms?” they high tail it to me and I love watching them hustle over to me. This came in very handy when there was a hawk in the neighbor’s yard this past spring. The babies are learning my worm call as well and love their worms. I sprinkle the worms in different spots and they already follow the cereal container that I dispense them from waiting for the worm shower to begin. Chubby’s have become a weapon in my arsenal of predator protection for my hens.
