Rent The Chicken is provided by more than 45 farmers and homesteaders across the United States and Canada to help members of our communities to try having backyard hens for fresh eggs without the commitment.  We provide delivery & pick-up (within set parameters), 2-4 egg laying hens, a portable chicken coop, feed for the 5-6 month rental, a book, a chicken help hotline, and of course Chubby Mealworms!  If you already have chickens, then our service is not for you but for your friend who keeps asking questions and isn’t sure if they are ready for the commitment!  Our Hatch The Chicken program allows families, schools, day cares, and senior care homes to experience baby chicks hatching and caring for baby chicks for two weeks.  When they start to be a bit too smelly and not so cute, we pick them up and bring them back to the farm. We are good members of society so our pets are likely spayed or neutered so children are not seeing live beings come to life.  Hatch The Chicken provides that experience for you!

In addition to Hatch The Chicken being popular at schools, Rent The Chicken is becoming more popular too!  When students are asked where eggs come from, they often say “the store”.  When a school hosts a Rent The Chicken package, the children are educated not just on the source of eggs but the science of the chicken, the role of a rooster, composting as well as the emotional connection to animals.  We have found that the PTO will help provide funding, parents will donate a rental to their child’s school or the school will promote our Referral Program and receive a $50 discount for each referral who places a deposit!
